Understanding IGI Reports
A section-by-section walkthrough of an IGI laboratory-grown diamond report.
IGI reports for laboratory-grown diamonds follow a consistent structure. Reading them from the top down makes comparison between stones straightforward.
Identification
The header states the report number, the date of issue and an explicit identification of the item as a laboratory-grown diamond. Where the laboratory can determine it, the growth process — CVD or HPHT — is noted, along with any post-growth treatment.
Grading results
The central block lists shape and cutting style, measurements, carat weight, colour, clarity, and the finish grades for cut, polish and symmetry. Proportions such as table percentage, depth percentage, crown angle and pavilion depth appear in the accompanying diagram.
Using the report when you buy
Confirm the report number matches the stone's inscription, check that measurements match the listing, and look at the plotted inclusions in relation to the table. A VS2 with inclusions towards the girdle will often face up cleaner than a VS2 with a central inclusion.
