Carat Weight
Why weight and visual size are not the same thing, and how to buy efficiently.
One carat equals 0.2 grams, divided into 100 points. A 0.75 carat diamond is described as seventy-five points.
Magic sizes
Prices jump at psychological thresholds: 0.50, 1.00, 1.50, 2.00 and 3.00 carats. Buying just below a threshold — 1.90 rather than 2.01 — often delivers a visually identical stone at a meaningfully lower price.
Face-up size
Compare millimetre measurements, not only weight. A well-proportioned 2.00 carat oval can present a larger face-up footprint than a deep 2.20 carat cushion.
